Stoneman Farm

The Broken Gable roof type is essentially a simple gable roof with high lean-tos attached on either side.  This is usually the result from additions with different roof pitches being attached to the sides although sometimes barns are constructed initially with this appearance (Allen Noble and Richard Cleek, The Old Barn Book).  The side roofs will have a less severe slope than the center and this break in the roof line is a good window into the evolution of a barn.

Spokane County has three listed barns on the register that possess a broken gable roof, the Alberthal Barn, Clyde Krick Farm and the Stoneman Farm.  The Clyde Krick barn is a unique combination of both the broken gable and English gambrel roof styles.
