Stuart Farm

The Western roof style, also referred to as the monitor, basilican or clerestory roof, has a raised center aisle that provides better light and ventilation than a traditional gable barn.  The western roof provides loft storage that is somewhere in between a gable and a gambrel (Dutch or English) roof but is more common on smaller outbuildings than barns (Allen Noble and Richard Cleek, The Old Barn Book).

Spokane County has two listed barns that were built in the western style, the Copenhaver Barn and the Stuart Farm, which, interestingly, could be considered a mixture of the western and gable-on-hip roof styles which produces a truly unusual roof.
