West Heights Park (now Palisades Park)
190.9 acres
The people of these cities are really in love with the landscape of their large parks. They find in the breadth and extent of the scenery in the large parks a pleasure and satisfaction, a restfulness for the nerves, and a soul-inspiring quality.
Olmsted Brothers Landscape Architects, Report to Board of Commissioners, 1908
Olmsted described this park as one of the most picturesque of the new parks, as the expanse of land naturally broken up by bold ledges provided a dramatic landscape for visitors to enjoy. The report proposed to preserve the abundance of natural foliage in this area, as well as the naturally occurring springs and running water. The plan for this park also included the establishment of walkways, as well as drives, for visitors to observe fine views of the city from cliffs. Today a significant portion of the proposed area is known as Palisades Park.
