Mission Avenue Park
1.77 acres
It is to those whose nerves are tired – and they are a large proportion of the dwellers in a city – that the parks are most immediately beneficial.
Olmsted Brothers Landscape Architects, Report to Board of Commissioners, 1908
Olmsted concluded that this park would not be as extravagant as others as a result of its small size and closed location with a neighborhood. Instead of a park with playfields or magnificent scenery, the report suggested the lawn be neatly trimmed and surrounded by decorative fencing that would support beautiful types of vines. Olmsted observed the surrounding neighborhood could not support an extravagant park, and instead suggested accenting the otherwise flat scenery with neat shrubs and other subtle landscaping to create a more pleasing atmosphere.
